Life Under Lockdown: Xi’an Residents Share Their 14-Day Experience

In the historic city of Xi’an, known for its ancient Terracotta Army, residents have been navigating life under strict lockdown for over two weeks. As part of efforts to contain a recent outbreak, communities have faced unprecedented restrictions, confining millions to their homes.

Local residents Huo Qingquan and Bi Zengkun shared insights into their day-to-day experiences during this period. Despite the challenges, they highlighted the effective measures taken to ensure the availability of household supplies and essential food items.

“Initially, there was concern about how we would access daily necessities,” said Huo. “But community volunteers and local authorities organized contactless delivery services. We receive regular supplies, and there’s a system in place to address any special needs.”

Bi echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the community spirit that has emerged. “Neighbors are looking out for one another. We’ve set up group chats to share information and resources. It’s heartening to see everyone come together in these trying times,” he explained.

The lockdown has also seen advancements in digital solutions to assist residents. Online platforms have been instrumental in facilitating orders and deliveries, minimizing physical contact. While challenges remain, particularly for the elderly and vulnerable, efforts are ongoing to address these issues.

Health officials have conducted multiple rounds of mass testing, and there are signs that the situation is stabilizing. Residents remain hopeful that with continued cooperation and adherence to guidelines, normalcy will soon return to Xi’an.

“We understand the necessity of these measures,” Huo remarked. “It’s about the greater good. While it’s not easy, we are doing our part to ensure everyone’s safety.”
