Mauritian Doctor’s Selfless Fight Against COVID-19 in East China

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in early 2020, Dr. Sumayyah Hosany, a physician from the Republic of Mauritius, found herself on the frontlines far from home. Residing in Wenzhou, in east China, she and her husband chose to stand alongside local residents in the battle against the virus.

“It was a time when everyone needed to come together,” Dr. Hosany recalls. Volunteering to screen temperatures at highway tolls, she braved the cold and uncertainty, ensuring that measures were in place to prevent the spread of the virus. Her medical expertise and compassionate spirit provided reassurance to many during those challenging days.

But her commitment did not stop there. Recognizing the escalating situation back in Mauritius, Dr. Hosany took the initiative to raise funds and gather essential supplies for her homeland. “I felt a responsibility to help my country, even from afar,” she explains. Coordinating logistics across continents, she successfully sent much-needed medical equipment and protective gear to assist healthcare workers in Mauritius.

For Dr. Hosany, the pandemic underscored a fundamental truth: “The world needs to fight the virus together.” Her actions exemplify the global solidarity required to overcome such crises. By bridging communities across Asia and Africa, she demonstrated how individual efforts can have a profound impact.

Dr. Hosany’s story is a testament to the power of compassion and cooperation in the face of adversity. As nations continue to navigate the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, her example serves as an inspiration for others to contribute in any way they can.
