Kabul Restaurateur Struggles as Offices Close and Residents Flee

In the bustling heart of Kabul, Aziz Mohammad once welcomed a steady stream of customers to his restaurant. The aroma of freshly cooked meals would draw in workers from nearby offices seeking breakfast and lunch. However, the city’s landscape has dramatically changed since the Taliban takeover, leaving Aziz facing an uncertain future.

“Most of my customers were employees from the offices around here,” Aziz explains, standing in his nearly empty establishment. “Now, the offices are closed, and many people have left the city. Business has dropped significantly.”

The closure of offices and the exodus of residents have taken a toll on local businesses like Aziz’s. The streets that were once lively with commerce are now quiet. The sense of security that encouraged daily routines has been replaced with apprehension.

“Security is the primary issue faced by all,” Aziz says. “If this issue were resolved, I believe things could improve. People need to feel safe to live their lives and support businesses like mine.”

The challenges faced by Aziz reflect a broader economic strain in Afghanistan as the nation grapples with political upheaval. Local entrepreneurs are struggling to sustain their livelihoods amid uncertainty and dwindling customer bases.

Despite the difficulties, Aziz remains hopeful. “I have been here for many years,” he shares. “I hope that peace will return, and with it, the people. Only then can businesses like mine thrive again.”
