Kabul Teacher of 42 Years Hopes for Students’ Bright Future Amid Changes
In the heart of Kabul, veteran educator Fawziya Arifi has dedicated over four decades to shaping young minds. Each morning, she followed her daily routine, making her way to the school where she has taught generations of students. But recently, the familiar hallways were empty; the school had closed its doors following the recent changes in the city.
“I went to register my attendance, but there was no one else there,” Arifi recounted. The closure came two weeks after the Taliban entered Kabul, bringing uncertainty to the education sector, especially for female students and teachers.
Despite the challenges, many of her students remain hopeful. “Some of my students hope the school will open as soon as possible so they can continue their studies,” Arifi shared.
Arifi is cautiously optimistic about the future. She anticipates that the schools may reopen under new regulations and restrictions. “If their rules and restrictions will not hamper my students in achieving their goals for a bright future, yes, I will definitely continue,” she affirmed, expressing her commitment to continue teaching.
Her dedication reflects a broader hope among educators and students alike—that education will persevere amidst change, and the aspirations of Afghanistan’s youth will not be dimmed.
