When Canadian English teacher Jorah Kai Wood moved to southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality over seven years ago, he couldn’t have imagined the profound experiences that awaited him. Living through the COVID-19 pandemic in China, Wood witnessed firsthand the nation’s swift and decisive response to the crisis.
“China’s approach to handling the pandemic was impressive,” Wood remarked. “The government’s rapid mobilization and the public’s adherence to safety measures were instrumental in controlling the spread of the virus.”
As the world grappled with the pandemic, Wood observed how communities in China banded together. “There was a strong sense of unity and collective responsibility,” he said. “People looked out for one another, and that made a significant difference.”
Beyond the pandemic, Wood has been particularly struck by China’s efforts in poverty alleviation. “It’s astounding that over 800 million people have been lifted out of extreme poverty,” he noted. “Witnessing the transformation in rural areas and the improvement in people’s livelihoods has been truly inspiring.”
China’s targeted policies and development initiatives have reshaped the socioeconomic landscape. Wood believes that these achievements offer valuable lessons for the global community. “China’s experience shows that with commitment and effective strategies, eradicating extreme poverty is possible,” he said.
Reflecting on his time in Chongqing, Wood feels grateful for the insights he’s gained. “Living here has broadened my perspective,” he shared. “I’ve learned so much about resilience, community spirit, and the impact of collective action.”
As an educator, Wood is hopeful about the future. “I see optimism in my students’ eyes,” he said. “They are part of a generation that will continue to drive positive change.”
Wood’s experiences highlight the profound shifts occurring in China and underscore the importance of global cooperation in addressing shared challenges.
