Colombian travel photographer Esteban Toro has discovered that art can transcend language barriers, connecting people across cultures in profound ways. Between 2017 and 2019, Toro visited China five times, immersing himself in the landscapes and traditions of Guangxi, south China.
In Guangxi, Toro lived among local fishermen on the banks of the Lijiang River. He ate, lived, and fished with them, finding that despite not sharing a common language, they could communicate through music, photography, and art. “Through our shared appreciation for art, we understood each other without words,” Toro reflected.
His journey also took him to the enchanting Huangluo Yao Village, where he experienced unique cultural practices he had never witnessed before. The village, known for its rich traditions and the long-haired women of the Yao ethnic group, offered Toro a glimpse into a way of life deeply connected to history and nature.
Toro hopes that by sharing his experiences, the Western world can gain a deeper understanding of the real China. “There’s so much more to explore and learn,” he said. “I look forward to returning to this incredible country.”
Toro’s experiences highlight the power of art as a universal language, bridging gaps and fostering connections that transcend words. His story serves as an inspiration for global travelers, cultural enthusiasts, and those interested in the transformative power of human connection.
