Pandemic Halts Spanish Cyclist’s Journey to Singapore, Sparks 25,700 km European Odyssey

Barcelona-based Spanish engineer Cabutí set out on an ambitious cycling journey from Barcelona to Singapore, just as the COVID-19 pandemic began to sweep across Europe.

An avid traveler and cyclist, he had meticulously planned his route, aiming to bridge continents on two wheels. However, in March 2020, only days into his expedition, the rapid escalation of the pandemic altered his plans dramatically.

On his second day in Italy, Cabutí found himself trapped by sudden border closures. The Italian government’s blockade, coupled with a hotel refusing his booked accommodation, forced him to abandon his goal of reaching Singapore.

Rather than return home defeated, Cabutí adapted. Over the next ten months, he cycled an astounding 25,700 kilometers across Europe. His journey took him through 43 countries, including Belarus, Slovenia, Germany, Switzerland, and France.

“This special trip has left me with a mixture of feelings,” Cabutí reflected. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, his odyssey allowed him to witness Europe’s diverse landscapes and cultures during an unprecedented time in history.

Cabutí’s story is a testament to resilience and adaptability in the face of global challenges, highlighting how unexpected obstacles can lead to new paths and experiences.
