South African Female Taxi Driver Perseveres Amid COVID-19 Challenges

Johannesburg, South Africa — As dawn breaks over Johannesburg, Sabina Mahlase prepares for another grueling day on the roads. For over 30 years, Sabina has been a taxi driver, a profession dominated by men and now further complicated by the relentless COVID-19 pandemic.

In South Africa, taxis are the lifeblood of daily transportation, responsible for moving about 15 million people, or 75% of commuters, every day. The pandemic, however, has severely impacted this essential service. With strict lockdowns and safety concerns, passengers are fewer, and the risks are greater.

“Business has slowed down significantly,” Sabina notes while sanitizing her taxi before the day’s first trip. “But people still need to get to work, to hospitals, to places of necessity. I feel a responsibility to help them, especially those who rely solely on taxis.”

Each morning, Sabina meticulously cleans her vehicle, ensuring that every surface is disinfected. She provides hand sanitizer to each passenger and reminds them to wear masks, despite some reluctance. “Not everyone understands the importance of these measures,” she laments. “I must be stronger for them, for myself, and for my family.”

The risks are undeniable. Sitting in close quarters with passengers all day increases the chance of infection. Yet, Sabina and many drivers like her continue to operate, acknowledging that without their service, the country’s economy could grind to a halt.

“It’s not just about driving,” Sabina explains. “It’s about keeping the nation moving, even when everything else seems to be standing still. We are all connected, and we all have a part to play in overcoming this crisis.”

Her resilience shines through the challenges. As she navigates the bustling streets, Sabina represents not just the steadfast spirit of South African taxi drivers but also the critical role they play in sustaining the country’s heartbeat during unprecedented times.
