The State Power Investment Corporation Limited (SPIC) recently held an open day event at the Hunutlu Thermal Power Plant in Turkey, showcasing the project’s progress and its commitment to environmental protection. Streamed live on December 23, the event highlighted how the plant harmonizes energy production with the preservation of local ecosystems.
Located in Adana province along the Mediterranean coast, the Hunutlu Thermal Power Plant boasts a total installed capacity of 1.32 million kilowatts. Despite its scale, the plant is designed with advanced flue-gas purification systems that integrate the stack with cooling towers, effectively minimizing emissions and reducing its ecological footprint.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the project is its proximity to the nesting grounds of sea turtles. Each year, these endangered creatures arrive on the nearby beaches to lay their eggs, and their hatchlings make their first journey to the sea. Thanks to SPIC’s stringent environmental measures, the construction and operation of the power plant have not introduced dust or pollution to these critical habitats.
Residents of Hunutlu village have observed that the plant’s presence has not disrupted the natural behaviors of the sea turtles. By implementing eco-friendly technologies and maintaining strict environmental standards, SPIC demonstrates that large-scale energy projects can coexist with wildlife conservation.
The open day event served as a platform for SPIC to engage with the community, international stakeholders, and environmentalists, emphasizing transparency and collaboration. It reflects a growing trend in Asia’s energy sector, where sustainable practices and environmental stewardship are becoming integral to development projects.
