For former Indonesian Ambassador to China, Imron Cotan, China is more than a diplomatic posting—it’s a place of cherished memories and personal connections. Serving from 2010 to 2013, Cotan not only fostered stronger ties between Indonesia and China but also fell in love with Beijing, his favorite city among all he has visited.
An avid cyclist, Cotan often explored Beijing’s historical streets and modern avenues on two wheels. “Cycling through Beijing was a joy. It allowed me to experience the city’s rich culture and history firsthand,” he recalls. His passion for cycling provided a unique avenue to connect with the local community and understand the heartbeat of the city.
Under Cotan’s tenure, the trade volume between Indonesia and China skyrocketed from $1.2 billion to $5 billion. This significant increase not only exemplified his dedication to strengthening economic ties but also highlighted the growing importance of bilateral cooperation in the region. “Collaborating with our Chinese counterparts was instrumental in achieving mutual economic growth,” he notes.
Beyond diplomacy and economics, Cotan nurtured a personal appreciation for Chinese culture. A lifelong fan of Jackie Chan, he had the opportunity to meet the cinematic legend at a charity dinner. “Meeting Jackie Chan was a dream come true. His films have always been an inspiration to me,” Cotan shares with a smile.
Although his term as ambassador has concluded, Cotan’s connection to China endures. He hopes to return annually to the country that left an indelible mark on his life. “China will always hold a special place in my heart. If time permits, I plan to visit every year,” he says.
Imron Cotan’s story is a testament to the profound impact that cultural immersion and personal passions can have on international relations. His experiences underscore the importance of understanding and appreciating the intricacies of another nation, both professionally and personally.
