Former Chilean Ambassador Pablo Cabrera Reflects on Deepening Ties with China

Editor’s note: "Ambassadors’ China Story" is a series about former ambassadors to China who share their China stories through old photos and mementos, providing details of their experiences through their own eyes.

A Diplomat’s Journey in Strengthening Chile-China Relations

Pablo Cabrera, who served as Chile’s ambassador to China from 2004 to 2006, played a pivotal role in enhancing the bilateral relations between the two nations. "As an ambassador," he recalled, "one of the most important tasks that I had was to be present in the negotiations for the FTA (Free Trade Agreement) between Chile and China."

In 2005, following five rounds of negotiations, Chile and China concluded a landmark Free Trade Agreement. At the time, China was Chile’s second-largest trading partner, and the agreement marked a significant milestone in their economic collaboration. Cabrera’s involvement in these negotiations not only strengthened trade ties but also paved the way for future cooperation.

A Passion for Chinese Culture

Beyond diplomacy, Cabrera developed a deep appreciation for Chinese culture. He became an avid collector of traditional Chinese puppets, which represent the rich ethnic heritage of China. "The faces and colors are beautiful," he described, expressing pride in how these puppets captivate the admiration of many people.

Continued Engagement with China

Even after his retirement, Cabrera’s connection with China remains strong. He collaborates with universities, delivers lectures, and participates in forums to share his insights and experiences. "I give some talks or participate in some forums, and China occupies an important place," he said.

Cabrera’s ongoing efforts reflect his dedication to fostering mutual understanding and strengthening the bonds between Chile and China. His story serves as an inspiring example of how diplomatic relations can evolve into lifelong commitments to international friendship and cultural exchange.
