Imron Cotan: An Ambassador’s Affection for China, Cycling, and Jackie Chan

From 2010 to 2013, Imron Cotan served as Indonesia’s ambassador to China, fostering strong economic ties and embracing the rich culture of his host nation. An avid cyclist, Cotan found Beijing to be his favorite city among the many he has visited, often exploring its streets and alleys on two wheels.

During his tenure, the trade volume between China and Indonesia soared from $1.2 billion to $5 billion, marking significant growth in economic exchanges between the two countries. Cotan played a pivotal role in this development, strengthening partnerships and facilitating mutual benefits.

Cotan’s appreciation for Chinese culture extended beyond diplomacy. A lifelong fan of Jackie Chan, he eagerly watched almost all of the actor’s films. His admiration culminated in a memorable encounter at a charity dinner, where he met Chan in person—a highlight of his time in China.

Now reflecting on his years in Beijing, Cotan expresses a deep desire to return. “If time permits, I plan to travel back to China every year,” he says, showcasing his enduring connection to the country that became a second home.
