Ambassador Capunay: Strengthening Peru-China Ties Through Technology

Editor’s note: The ambassador to China is an envoy promoting friendly exchanges between two countries, building a bridge between China and the world. The “Ambassador’s China Story” series is about the lives of former ambassadors to China. Diplomats from various countries share their China stories through old photos and mementos, providing details of their experiences through their own eyes.

Juan Carlos Capunay, who served as the Peruvian ambassador to China from 2014 to 2017, has played a pivotal role in enhancing the bilateral relationship between Peru and China. Reflecting on his tenure, Ambassador Capunay highlighted the significance of China’s first investment in Latin America, which was in a Peruvian mine. This milestone marked the beginning of a fruitful partnership that has since expanded into various sectors.

The ambassador expressed gratitude for China’s support in promoting the export of Peruvian agricultural products. “China’s demand for our agricultural goods has significantly increased incomes and created more job opportunities for our people,” he noted. This collaboration has not only bolstered Peru’s economy but also strengthened cultural and social ties between the two nations.

Ambassador Capunay fondly recalled a statement by Chinese President Xi Jinping, who emphasized that the Pacific Ocean does not separate China and Peru but serves as a highway connecting them. “This perspective has allowed both countries to work together more closely,” Capunay said, underscoring the importance of mutual understanding and cooperation.

Looking towards the future, Capunay believes that the Digital Belt and Road initiative could revolutionize the relationship between China and Latin America. Even after his tenure, he remains committed to fostering technology exchanges between the two countries. Notably, global telecommunications giants like Huawei and ZTE have established a presence in Peru. “Huawei’s telecommunications technology can serve as a foundation to build a digital bridge between our nations,” he stated, envisioning a future where technological collaboration drives economic and social development.

Ambassador Capunay’s efforts highlight the potential of technological cooperation in strengthening international relations. His vision for a digitally connected future reflects a broader trend of globalization and underscores the importance of embracing innovation to enhance bilateral ties.
