Former Tunisian Ambassador Basly Reflects on Cultural Bonds with China

For Mohamed Sahbi Basly, Tunisia’s ambassador to China from 2004 to 2010, his time in the Chinese mainland was more than a diplomatic mission—it was a personal journey of cultural discovery and connection. A self-proclaimed enthusiast of Chinese jackets, Basly often donned traditional attire, saying, “I feel like one of them,” as he proudly showcased a wardrobe full of Chinese garments he wore regularly.

Basly found unexpected similarities between Tunisian and Chinese cultures, particularly in ceramics. During a visit to a museum in Xi’an, he was intrigued to learn about links between the ancient Carthaginian empire and China’s Qin dynasty, discovering shared historical threads that wove their civilizations together thousands of years ago.

Throughout his six-year tenure, Ambassador Basly played a pivotal role in strengthening bilateral relations between Tunisia and China. In 2005, he successfully negotiated the removal of visa requirements for official and diplomatic passport holders from both countries, facilitating formal exchanges and fostering closer ties.

“Bridging the gap between our nations was always my goal,” Basly reflected. “By easing travel and embracing cultural similarities, we opened doors for greater understanding and cooperation.”

Basly’s experiences highlight the profound impact of cultural exchange in international diplomacy. His personal connection to Chinese culture and his efforts to enhance bilateral relations exemplify the importance of mutual respect and shared heritage in global affairs.
