In 2006, award-winning Spanish-Argentinian travel photographer Angel Lopez-Soto embarked on a unique journey aboard the newly inaugurated Beijing-Lhasa railway. As part of a select group of international journalists and photographers, he witnessed firsthand one of China\’s most remarkable engineering feats.
Over five days and 1,956 kilometers, Lopez-Soto documented the breathtaking transition from the bustling capital of Beijing to the serene heights of Lhasa, the heart of Tibet. The luxury train, equipped with advanced oxygen systems akin to those used in airplanes, traversed some of the most challenging terrains on earth, offering unparalleled views of the vast frozen landscapes.
“The contrasts in Tibet are striking,” Lopez-Soto reflected. “The harsh yet beautiful landscapes, and the people—isolated from the world yet warm and welcoming—left an indelible impression on me.”
