CHNG Showcases Cambodia’s Largest Hydropower Station at Online Open Day

Phnom Penh, Cambodia — China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd. (CHNG) hosted an online open day event on November 23, spotlighting the Se-San River II Hydropower Station, Cambodia’s largest hydropower project.

Under the theme "Energize where you are", the event showcased the operational excellence of the hydropower station amidst global challenges and highlighted CHNG’s contributions to environmental sustainability and social development in the region.

Nestled in the mountainous northeast of Cambodia, the Se-San River II Hydropower Station is often referred to as the country’s own "Three Gorges Project." Boasting Asia’s longest dam at 6,500 meters, the station has an installed capacity of 400,000 kilowatts, supplying 14 percent of Cambodia’s total power. Annually, it generates approximately two billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, significantly alleviating energy shortages and reducing electricity costs for local communities.

Emphasizing ecological responsibility, CHNG invested around $1.5 million to construct a bio-fishway on the right bank of the Se-San River, mitigating environmental impacts and promoting biodiversity. Additionally, the company has actively engaged in community development by building schools, clinics, temples, and police stations near National Highway No. 78. Efforts also include improving infrastructure through drainage systems, power grids, and wells to enhance the quality of life for nearby residents.

Lin Weijie, Chief Economist of CHNG, remarked during the event, "We are committed to deepening green energy cooperation under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. Our goal is to contribute to the sustainable energy development and transformation of Cambodia."

The Se-San River II Hydropower Station stands as a testament to international collaboration in renewable energy, reflecting a shared vision for a greener future in Southeast Asia.
