China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) recently showcased the progress of the Central Business District (CBD) project in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital during an online open-day event. Among the highlights is the Iconic Tower, which, upon completion, will stand at 385.8 meters, making it the tallest building in Africa.
CSCEC’s Egypt branch employs approximately 2,000 people, with numbers rising to over 5,000 during peak construction periods. One of the pioneering Egyptians in the company is administration manager Hanan Osman Abdelkader, who has dedicated nearly 30 years to CSCEC. Reflecting on her journey, Hanan says, “I’m very happy that I work at CSCEC. This is my home, and my colleagues are my family.” She believes her professional growth sets a positive example for Egyptian women, demonstrating opportunities in industries traditionally dominated by men.
Hanan introduced her colleague, decoration design engineer Mary Raouf. Mary’s connection to China runs deep; her mother was among the first Egyptian students to study Chinese at university, filling their home with Chinese literature. Influenced by her mother’s passion, Mary developed a love for Chinese culture. She expressed pride in contributing to the CBD project, stating that CSCEC has played a significant role in promoting cultural exchanges between China and Egypt.
As part of its commitment to cultural exchange, CSCEC has constructed a friendship school where Egyptian children have the opportunity to learn Chinese from company volunteers. Mary highlights this initiative as an example of how the project extends beyond construction, fostering mutual understanding and strengthening ties between the two nations.
Through the efforts of dedicated individuals like Hanan and Mary, the CBD project not only transforms Egypt’s skyline but also serves as a bridge connecting Chinese and Egyptian cultures. Their stories reflect the broader impact of international collaboration on personal lives and communities.
