China-Built Wind Turbines Power South Africa’s Largest Wind Farm

South Africa’s largest wind power project, located in De Aar, is transforming the nation’s energy landscape through sustainable practices. Constructed by Longyuan South Africa Renewables, a subsidiary of China Longyuan Power Group Corporation Limited under China Energy Investment Corporation (China Energy), the De Aar Wind Power Project marks a significant milestone in China Energy’s global endeavors.

Since commencing commercial operations on October 31, 2017, the wind farms have generated over 2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, providing clean energy to approximately 300,000 households. This substantial contribution not only bolsters South Africa’s renewable energy capacity but also signifies the strengthening of Sino-South African cooperation in the energy sector.

The project features wind turbines and towers entirely manufactured in China. These components were transported to South Africa, overcoming strict inland transport restrictions. The successful delivery and installation of the equipment highlight the logistical prowess and collaborative efforts between the Chinese and South African teams.

Turbine number five, perched on the highest point of the wind farm, exemplifies the advanced technology and engineering excellence implemented in the project. The turbines harness wind energy efficiently, contributing significantly to the region’s power supply and demonstrating the potential for future renewable energy projects across Africa.

The De Aar Wind Power Project stands as a testament to sustainable development and international cooperation, showcasing how renewable energy initiatives can drive economic growth, provide clean energy solutions, and foster stronger ties between nations.
