The Nāgānanda International Institute for Buddhist Studies (NIIBS) in Sri Lanka has introduced a Sinhalese translation of the traditional Chinese classic Di Zi Gui (Standards for Being a Good Pupil and Child), enriching the educational experience of its students. This initiative is the work of Bodagama Chandima, the vice-chancellor of NIIBS, who recognized the timeless value of the text’s teachings.
Originally composed during the Qing Dynasty, Di Zi Gui outlines the proper conduct for young people, emphasizing virtues such as respect, humility, and diligence. By bringing this classic to Sinhalese-speaking students, Chandima aims to foster moral development and cross-cultural understanding.
“The wisdom contained in Di Zi Gui resonates deeply with Buddhist principles,” said Chandima. “Our students have embraced the lessons, finding them relevant to their daily lives and personal growth.”
The collaboration between China and Sri Lanka extends beyond cultural exchange. During the construction of the Port City Colombo project, China Harbour Engineering Company contributed to the local community by building NIIBS, demonstrating a commitment to educational development.
Students at NIIBS have expressed appreciation for the new learning material. “Studying Di Zi Gui has given me new insights into ethical conduct and interpersonal relationships,” said one student. “It connects us with a broader Asian heritage.”
This endeavor highlights the value of intercultural dialogue and the sharing of knowledge across borders. By integrating traditional Chinese teachings into the curriculum, NIIBS is fostering a more inclusive and enlightened educational environment.
