Hubei Farmers Strive to Revive Zongzi Leaf Business Ahead of Dragon Boat Festival

As the Dragon Boat Festival approaches, farmers near the Yangtze River in Hubei Province are working tirelessly to harvest leaves essential for making Zongzi, a traditional Chinese delicacy made of sticky rice wrapped in leaves.

Starting in early April, a month earlier than usual, these dedicated workers began collecting leaves to meet the anticipated demand for Zongzi during the festival celebrated nationwide and beyond.

The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted their businesses, with sales plummeting to only 60 percent of their usual levels due to lockdown restrictions. In an effort to make up for the losses, farmers are not only working harder but also relying on online sales to reach customers.

Despite the challenges, the farmers find solace in spending more time with their families during these difficult times. “It’s nice to have the kids around,” one worker shared, highlighting a silver lining amid the hardships.

The Dragon Boat Festival, which falls in June, is a significant cultural event in China, marked by boat races and the sharing of Zongzi among family and friends. The farmers’ dedication ensures that this cherished tradition continues, bringing comfort and a sense of normalcy to people during uncertain times.

Their relentless efforts not only aim to revive their own livelihoods but also to preserve a cultural heritage that unites communities across the nation.
