China’s high-speed trains are renowned worldwide for their speed and efficiency, whisking passengers between cities at astonishing velocities. But amid the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring these speedy journeys are also safe has become a critical mission.
Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of mechanics works tirelessly to maintain the trains’ air conditioning systems—often referred to as the “respiratory system” of the train. Among them are Liu Chuanhui and Liang Jun, seasoned technicians at the Zhengzhou East Railway Institute in central China.
At the end of each journey, Liu and Liang don their protective gear and begin a meticulous process. They check ventilation rates, replace filter screens, and thoroughly clean and disinfect the entire system. Their goal is simple yet profound: to ensure that every passenger breathes clean, safe air during their trip.
“We see ourselves as the ‘lung doctors’ of the high-speed trains,” says Liu with a modest smile. “Just as healthy lungs are vital for a person, a well-maintained ventilation system is essential for the train.”
Their work has taken on heightened importance during the pandemic. The relatively closed environment of a train cabin presents challenges for air circulation, making effective ventilation crucial to reduce the risk of virus transmission.
“We feel a great responsibility,” adds Liang. “Every adjustment we make contributes to the safety and peace of mind of thousands of passengers.”
The dedication of mechanics like Liu and Liang ensures that China’s high-speed trains remain not only fast but also safe. Their behind-the-scenes efforts are a testament to the countless individuals working to keep essential services running smoothly during challenging times.
