Residing on a houseboat on the edge of Lough Gill in Sligo, Ireland, the family found peace surrounded by water and nature.
“We’ve always lived on the houseboat,” Fionn shared. “Being enveloped by the tranquility of the lake and the natural world has been soothing, especially during these uncertain times.” The pandemic altered daily routines, but for the McArthur family, it was an extension of their life afloat.
With concerns over the higher risk COVID-19 posed to older generations, Fionn took on the responsibility of weekly grocery runs, ensuring his parents minimized their exposure. “Using our boat instead of public transportation not only helps us avoid social contact but also makes the journey safer,” he explained. The scenic route across the lake offered breathtaking views, providing a welcome distraction from global anxieties.
Technology played a significant role in maintaining connections. The family spent time surfing the internet, keeping in touch with the outside world while remaining physically distant. Fionn’s mother, along with local seamstresses, contributed by making masks, supporting the community’s efforts to curb the virus’s spread.
“It’s a unique situation,” Fionn remarked. “Our lifestyle has given us a different perspective on isolation and community support. We feel fortunate to be able to help in our way while staying safe.”
