In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, a unique initiative has emerged in Jerusalem’s eastern neighborhoods. The Saint George Hotel, owned by a Palestinian businessman, has been transformed into a quarantine center entirely managed by Palestinian non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Located just five minutes from the Old City, this project stands as a symbol of community solidarity in challenging times.
Journalist Ahmad Budeiri, 40, is one of the coordinators leading this effort. Alongside a dedicated team of volunteers, they have organized the hotel’s transformation to accommodate Palestinian residents who have tested positive for COVID-19 or are suspected of infection. Many of these individuals, including students and workers, lack suitable spaces to safely quarantine without risking the health of their families.
The hotel provides a haven for those who cannot isolate at home, ensuring they receive the care and support needed during their quarantine period. It also serves Palestinian students returning from abroad who, upon arrival, are required by Israeli authorities to undergo a 14-day quarantine. By offering the hotel free of charge, the owner contributes significantly to alleviating the burdens faced by the community during the pandemic.
This volunteer-driven project not only addresses public health needs but also highlights the power of grassroots organizations in fostering resilience. Despite longstanding divisions, the collective efforts of the Palestinian NGOs at the Saint George Hotel demonstrate a commitment to overcoming adversity through unity and compassion.
