Bangkok, Thailand — In the bustling Khlong San District of Bangkok, 51-year-old Bancha Panniwat stands at the forefront of a grassroots movement against COVID-19. As the chief and founder of the volunteer group Thais for Thais, Panniwat has dedicated his own savings to protect the most vulnerable in his community.
“I couldn’t just stand by and watch,” says Panniwat, wiping sweat from his brow under the relentless Thai sun. “Our community needed help, and we had to act fast.”
Recognizing the heightened risk faced by poorer neighborhoods, Panniwat and his team purchased disinfectant chemicals and a spray machine, initiating thorough sanitation efforts throughout the district. Donning personal protective equipment (PPE) in sweltering temperatures, they tirelessly disinfect communal areas, distribute food supplies, and prepare hand sanitizers.
The volunteers have also established temperature check booths, ensuring early detection of potential cases. Despite the challenges, including the oppressive heat amplified by protective gear, Panniwat remains undeterred.
“It’s always summer here, and wearing PPE isn’t easy,” he admits. “But we won’t stop until this crisis is over.”
The efforts of Thais for Thais have not gone unnoticed. Their proactive approach has played a significant role in preventing a severe outbreak in Khlong San District. Local residents express gratitude for the volunteers’ dedication, noting a renewed sense of community solidarity.
