As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to grip New York City, the city’s most vulnerable populations are facing unprecedented challenges. Anthony Dussard, a dedicated social worker at a nonprofit organization assisting homeless families, shares his firsthand observations of a growing crisis.
“We’ve seen a significant increase in the number of homeless individuals turning to drugs,” Dussard explains. “The prolonged isolation, loss of income, and uncertainty about the future are pushing people towards substance abuse as a coping mechanism.”
Dussard notes that the pandemic has exacerbated existing issues within the homeless community. “Many of the support systems and shelters have reduced capacity due to health guidelines, leaving people without the resources they need,” he says. “This lack of support is contributing to a surge in drug addiction.”

Despite the challenges, Dussard remains committed to his work. “We’re doing everything we can to provide assistance, but we need more support from the community and policymakers,” he urges. “Together, we can help these individuals find hope and a path forward.”
