As the COVID-19 pandemic impacts economies worldwide, Vietnam has emerged with a unique solution to support its underprivileged citizens: “Rice ATMs.”
In response to the nationwide social isolation measures implemented on April 1 to contain the spread of the virus, many Vietnamese have found themselves out of work. Recognizing the urgent need, a Vietnamese entrepreneur and his team launched the “Rice ATM” project to provide free rice to those in need during these challenging times.
The dispensers are strategically located in Nghia Tan Ward, Cau Giay District, and at the cultural house in Bac Tu Liem District in Hanoi. Each dispenser operates around the clock, distributing 3 to 4 tonnes of rice daily, aiding approximately 1,000 residents with 3 kilograms of rice per person.
“This initiative is about more than just rice; it’s about compassion and community spirit,” said one organizer. The “Rice ATMs” have become a beacon of hope, ensuring that no one goes hungry amid the pandemic.
Vietnam’s proactive measures against COVID-19 have been praised globally. As of April 18, the World Health Organization reported 268 confirmed cases and zero deaths in the country. The government’s swift action and community-driven projects like the “Rice ATMs” highlight the nation’s resilience and solidarity.
The success of the “Rice ATMs” has inspired similar initiatives across Vietnam, showcasing how innovative solutions can make a significant difference in times of crisis.
