Chinese Community in Japan Rallies to Support Wuhan Amid COVID-19 Outbreak
As the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, a dedicated group of Wuhan natives living in Japan took swift action to support their hometown. Leveraging their connections and resources, they established a direct logistics route from Japan to hospitals in Wuhan, ensuring much-needed medical supplies reached the frontlines promptly.
By Tuesday night, the collective efforts had led to the donation of 203,380 masks, 22,473 pieces of protective clothing, 2,830 goggles, and 16,100 pairs of gloves directly to hospitals in Wuhan.
“We are both people from Hubei and Wuhan; this is what we have to do,” said Xu Xilan, a restaurant owner who has been residing in Japan for over 30 years. Her deep-rooted connection to her homeland motivated her to join the initiative and mobilize others within the Chinese community in Japan.
Meng Zhi, who has lived in Japan for 18 years and works in the banking sector, shared his concerns for his family members back in Wuhan. “In this hard time, when we need care the most, being with family is more important than anything,” Meng expressed. “Family affection and love cannot be exchanged for money or career success. Once family leaves, they’re gone forever.” Driven by this sentiment, Meng has been actively involved in collecting supplies and coordinating donations to support those affected in Wuhan.
The solidarity shown by the Chinese community in Japan highlights the profound ties that transcend borders. Their compassionate efforts not only provide tangible aid but also deliver a powerful message of unity and hope during challenging times.
