Los Angeles Unveils Liu Fang Yuan, Largest Chinese Garden Outside China

On December 4, 2019, Los Angeles celebrated the completion of the Liu Fang Yuan Garden at the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, marking it as the largest Chinese-style garden outside of China.

Known as the “Sister Garden” to the famed Humble Administrator’s Garden in Suzhou—often referred to as the “Venice of China”—Liu Fang Yuan embodies a remarkable cross-cultural collaboration. Over 14 years, architects and artisans from China and America joined forces to create a space that seamlessly merges botanical beauty with artistic and scholarly elements.

At the heart of this endeavor is Gu Weihua, a 62-year-old Chinese architect who played a pivotal role in the garden’s expansion. Working closely with his 23-year-old American apprentice, Anthony, Gu shares fascinating, untold stories of their shared journey, bridging cultures and generations through their dedication to this project.

“Working on Liu Fang Yuan has been a profound experience,” Gu reflects. “It’s not just about building a garden; it’s about fostering understanding and appreciation between our cultures.”

Liu Fang Yuan, which translates to “Garden of Flowing Fragrance,” offers visitors a serene landscape infused with traditional Chinese design principles. The garden features intricately carved pavilions, tranquil lakes, and winding pathways that invite guests to explore and immerse themselves in the harmony of nature and art.

The completion of Liu Fang Yuan stands as a testament to international cooperation and the sharing of cultural heritage. It provides a unique opportunity for visitors worldwide to experience the essence of Chinese garden artistry without leaving the United States.

As the largest Chinese-style garden outside China, Liu Fang Yuan not only enhances Los Angeles’s cultural landscape but also serves as a symbol of friendship and mutual respect between the East and the West. It invites people from all walks of life to discover and appreciate the rich tapestry of Chinese culture and its timeless connection to nature.
