UNMISS Commander Hails Chinese Peacekeepers as ‘A Fortunate Presence’ in South Sudan

Lt. General Mohan Subramanian, Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), has publicly praised Chinese peacekeepers for their critical role in maintaining stability during a tense period in the region. In an exclusive interview with CGTN correspondent Han Bin, Subramanian emphasized the China infantry battalion's professionalism and dedication, calling their presence in UNMISS 'fortunate' for the mission's success.

'Their technical expertise and disciplined approach set a high standard for peacekeeping operations,' Subramanian noted, highlighting collaborative efforts to protect civilians and support humanitarian initiatives. The remarks come ahead of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers on May 29, which honors over 4,000 peacekeepers who have lost their lives since 1948.

Chinese peacekeepers have constructed key infrastructure, provided medical aid, and facilitated community engagement programs in South Sudan since their deployment. Analysts suggest such contributions reinforce China's growing role in multilateral security frameworks while addressing Africa's development needs.

UNMISS, established in 2011, remains one of the UN's largest and most complex peacekeeping missions, with over 18,000 personnel from 73 countries and regions.
