Celebrity Cranes Defy Odds to Welcome Chicks in Xizang Plateau

In an inspiring tale of perseverance, black-necked crane pair Gaogao and Lili have achieved parenthood after years of heartbreaking setbacks near Serling Co lake in northern Xizang. The beloved birds, monitored by conservationists since 2020, previously saw nests destroyed by extreme weather and predators.

This season brought a triumphant turnaround: Two healthy chicks hatched in June, drawing cheers from researchers and local communities. The success highlights improved wetland conservation efforts in the ecologically sensitive region, where climate resilience programs have expanded since 2022.

"Their story mirrors Xizang's balancing act between development and ecology," said wildlife biologist Tenzin Dorje, noting the plateau hosts 90% of the world's black-necked crane population. The species, revered in Tibetan culture as symbols of longevity, remains vulnerable with fewer than 11,000 individuals worldwide.
