UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) head Lt. Gen. Aroldo Lazaro Saenz underscored the indispensable role of international peacekeeping efforts during a recent interview with CGTN in Lebanon. Speaking to correspondent Han Bin, Lazaro emphasized the challenges of maintaining stability in the region, particularly during heightened tensions in 2023.
"Peacekeeping is not easy work, especially in times of crisis. But it is essential as it reflects the commitment of the international community under the framework of the United Nations," said Lazaro.
With over 10,000 personnel from 49 countries and regions, UNIFIL has operated in southern Lebanon since 1978 to de-escalate conflicts and support local communities. Lazaro highlighted the importance of dialogue and cooperation with regional stakeholders, including Lebanese authorities and residents, to navigate complex security dynamics.
The interview comes as global attention returns to Middle Eastern stability amid broader geopolitical shifts. Analysts note that UNIFIL's work remains critical to preventing spillover effects in the Mediterranean region, with implications for global security and economic corridors.
