Graduate Returns Home to Innovate Farming with Smart Technology

After earning her master’s degree, Tian Shuxian made an unconventional decision that surprised many. Instead of pursuing a career in the bustling cities, she returned to her rural hometown in central China’s Hubei Province to embark on an agricultural venture.

Determined to make a difference, Tian introduced modern technology to help local farmers “get smarter” with their practices. She pioneered an integrated farming model that combines rice cultivation with crayfish and duck rearing. This innovative approach not only enhances productivity but also promotes ecological balance within the farming system.

The integrated model allows the ducks to feed on pests in the rice fields, reducing the need for chemical pesticides, while the crayfish help in aerating the soil. This symbiotic system has led to healthier crops and increased yields, benefiting the local farming community.

Tian’s dedication to modernizing agriculture in her hometown has inspired others to consider the possibilities of combining education with traditional industries. Her work exemplifies how modern technology and innovative thinking can transform rural economies and promote sustainable development.
