Guardians of the Skies: Protecting China’s “International Airport for Birds”

The Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve in Dongying, Shandong Province, stands as a sanctuary for migratory birds, earning the nickname China’s “International Airport for Birds.” Since its establishment in 1990, the reserve has witnessed a remarkable increase in bird species from 187 to 373. Among these are rare and protected species such as the oriental white stork and Saunders’s gull.

At the forefront of conservation efforts is senior engineer Zhao Yajie and her dedicated team. Utilizing advanced technology, they are committed to preserving this vibrant ecological haven for future generations. “Our goal is to protect the natural habitat and ensure the safe passage of migratory birds,” Zhao shares.

The reserve’s success story reflects China’s broader commitment to environmental protection and biodiversity. The integration of technology in monitoring and safeguarding the area has not only increased the bird population but also enhanced the ecological balance of the region.

The Yellow River Delta continues to be a crucial stopover for birds migrating along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. As global environmental challenges intensify, the efforts of Zhao and her team highlight the importance of concerted action in wildlife conservation.
