Over the past three decades, China has been an integral part of a UNESCO-led group comprising 30 countries dedicated to restoring Angkor Wat, Cambodia’s national treasure. Chinese experts from various fields have successfully completed the restoration of two temple sites and are now preparing for a new project.
These restoration efforts have not only made a significant economic contribution to Cambodia’s tourism industry but have also helped preserve a site that embodies essential elements of Cambodian culture. Among these is the ancient martial art of Bokator, depicted on the temple’s intricate bas-reliefs.
Bokator, a traditional combat style with roots dating back centuries, plays a vital role in Cambodia’s cultural identity. The resurgence of interest in Bokator, inspired by its representations at Angkor Wat, is encouraging the younger generation to embrace and keep this tradition alive.
The collaborative restoration projects have strengthened cultural ties and promoted a shared appreciation for Cambodia’s rich history. As China and other nations continue their work, the preservation of Angkor Wat stands as a testament to international cooperation in safeguarding cultural heritage for future generations.
