Cypriot Politician Eleni Evagorou Highlights Europe’s Challenges and China’s Social Progress

In an exclusive interview with CGTN’s Zhang Wan, Eleni Evagorou, a member of the Central Committee of the Progressive Party of Working People of Cyprus, shed light on the pressing challenges facing Europe under neoliberal policies and the alarming rise of far-right populism.

Evagorou expressed deep concern over the socioeconomic issues plaguing Europe, attributing them to the widespread implementation of neoliberal policies that have, in her view, exacerbated inequality and social unrest. “We are witnessing a growing divide between the wealthy and the poor, and this divide is fueling the resurgence of far-right ideologies,” she remarked.

Turning her attention to China, Evagorou praised the nation’s remarkable achievements in poverty alleviation and gender equality. She highlighted China’s success in lifting millions out of poverty and advancing women’s rights as exemplary models for other countries to emulate. “China’s progress in these areas demonstrates the effectiveness of socialism with Chinese characteristics,” she stated. “There is much we can learn from their approach to address our own contemporary issues.”

Evagorou emphasized the importance of international cooperation and the exchange of ideas to combat global challenges such as economic disparity and social injustice. She urged European leaders to consider alternative policies that prioritize the well-being of all citizens over the interests of a few.

The interview underscored the growing interest among global political figures in China’s development strategies and their potential applicability in different contexts. As Europe grapples with internal divisions and external pressures, voices like Evagorou’s advocate for a reassessment of current policies in favor of more equitable and inclusive approaches.
