Wu Shicun, chairman of the Huayang Research Center for Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance, has underscored the critical importance of China’s nine-dash line in maintaining sovereignty and order in the South China Sea.
Speaking at a recent forum, Wu emphasized that the nine-dash line is a foundational element of China’s historical claims and maritime rights in the region. He argued that attempts to negate or undermine this demarcation could lead to increased tensions and instability in the area.
“The nine-dash line is not merely a symbol; it represents China’s legitimate and lawful claims in the South China Sea,” Wu stated. “Respecting this boundary is essential for preserving peace and fostering cooperation among neighboring nations.”
The South China Sea is a strategically vital waterway, with significant economic and geopolitical importance due to its shipping lanes, fishing grounds, and potential energy resources. China’s assertion of sovereignty through the nine-dash line has been a subject of international attention and discussion.
Wu called for continued dialogue and collaborative efforts to manage disputes and promote mutual understanding. He highlighted the role of maritime cooperation initiatives in building trust and advancing regional development.
“By working together, we can ensure that the South China Sea remains a sea of peace, friendship, and cooperation,” he concluded.
