For 38 years, American professor William N. Brown has called the city of Xiamen home. As a faculty member at Xiamen University, Brown has witnessed firsthand the remarkable transformation of China through its reform and opening-up policies.
“When I first arrived in Xiamen in the 1980s, the city was vastly different,” Brown recalls. “Over the years, I’ve seen it grow into a vibrant metropolis, blending modern development with rich cultural heritage.”
Brown’s deep affection for southern Fujian’s culture and people has led him to consider himself a Xiamen native. Immersing himself in the local community, he has dedicated his life to fostering cross-cultural understanding between China and the West.
“I fell in love with the warmth and hospitality of the people here,” he says. “Their traditions, customs, and way of life have become an integral part of who I am.”
Throughout his tenure at Xiamen University, Brown has not only taught countless students but also documented his experiences and observations. He has authored several books and articles, sharing insights into China’s rapid development and its impact on society.
Brown’s story is a testament to the profound connections that can be forged across cultures. His commitment to bridging gaps and sharing knowledge exemplifies the unique role that educators play in a globalized world.
As China continues to evolve, Brown remains an enthusiastic participant in its journey. “I look forward to many more years in Xiamen,” he smiles. “This is my home.”
