Xinjiang’s Sweet Tradition: Marzipan Blending Grapes and Almonds

In the heart of Xinjiang, grape farmer Gulishan is keeping a cherished family tradition alive. Combining almonds, water from the ancient Karez Well, and the juice of fresh grapes from her own orchard, she crafts a unique marzipan that encapsulates the natural flavors of the region.

Recalling the days of her childhood, Gulishan speaks fondly of her grandmother, who taught her the art of making this local marzipan. “It was natural,” she remembers, emphasizing the simplicity and purity of the ingredients used.

Now a mother herself, Gulishan is determined to pass down this sweet legacy to her son. “I wanted him to experience the unique combination of natural flavors that I grew up with,” she says, as she skillfully blends the almonds and grape juice, continuing the family’s culinary heritage.

The marzipan not only represents a delicious treat but also symbolizes the rich cultural tapestry of Xinjiang, where traditions are preserved and celebrated through generations.

For those with a sweet tooth and an appetite for cultural exploration, the story of Gulishan and her marzipan is featured in “Sweet Planet,” co-produced by CGTN and Insight TV, premiering on March 29.
