These lines echo through the valleys of Lintao County in northwest China’s Gansu Province, where a segment of the Great Wall, built by the State of Qin over 2,000 years ago, still stands. Though time has reduced it to little more than an earthen embankment, this ancient fortification remains a potent symbol for the local community—a testament to their rich cultural heritage and a sentinel of their shared history.
For residents like Zhao Qinghua, a local Chinese language teacher who grew up in the shadow of the Wall, preservation is a personal mission. “Each brick and mound tells a story,” Zhao says. “We need to educate our youth about the significance of these relics so they can appreciate and continue our cultural legacy.”
Recognizing the importance of community involvement, Yang Xin, a legislative liaison officer in Lintao County, is gathering feedback on a draft amendment to the Law on the Protection of Cultural Relics. Yang believes that incorporating local voices is crucial for effective heritage preservation. “It’s essential that the laws reflect the needs and desires of the people they affect,” he notes. “Preserving our heritage is a shared responsibility, and involving local communities ensures that preservation efforts are sustainable and effective.”
Zhao has proposed that the new legislation include provisions for increased community engagement and education programs. By promoting awareness among younger generations, he hopes to foster a deeper appreciation and sense of responsibility toward cultural relics.
As China continues to modernize, balancing development with the preservation of cultural heritage becomes increasingly significant. The draft amendment represents an opportunity to strengthen legal protections while encouraging public participation.
