Harsh Conditions Worsen in South Gaza Refugee Camp Amid Winter Rains

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) operates the largest refugee camp in South Gaza. With the recent influx of refugees from northern Gaza and the onset of winter rains, living conditions within the camp are deteriorating rapidly.

As families flee escalating tensions in the north, the camp’s population has swelled beyond its capacity. Basic necessities such as clean water, food, and medical supplies are increasingly scarce. The overcrowded conditions are straining the limited resources and infrastructure available.

The winter season poses additional challenges. Temporary shelters are ill-equipped to withstand heavy rains, leading to flooding and damp conditions. Health concerns are mounting as the risk of waterborne diseases and respiratory infections rises, particularly among children and the elderly.

Humanitarian organizations are urging for immediate assistance to address the urgent needs of the displaced population. “We are in dire need of additional supplies and support to prevent a humanitarian disaster,” a UNRWA spokesperson stated.

The situation highlights the broader humanitarian implications of regional instability. International attention and aid are critical to alleviating the suffering of those affected and to supporting efforts toward a sustainable resolution.
