Gaza’s Newborns Journey to Safety: The Remarkable Survival of Baby Malak

In the heart of Gaza, amid escalating conflict and dwindling resources, a remarkable story of resilience has emerged. In early November, Al Shifa Hospital faced a dire crisis as fuel supplies ran out, plunging the facility into darkness. With power cut and incubators failing, doctors were forced to evacuate premature babies, battling time to save the most vulnerable.

On November 19, 36 infants born during this tumultuous period were transferred to Al-Helal Al-Emarati Maternity Hospital in Tel Al-Sultan. The journey was fraught with peril, and tragically, five of the infants did not survive the transfer.

The following day, 28 of the 31 surviving infants were sent to Egypt in hopes of receiving the care they desperately needed. Three infants, too fragile to endure the journey, remained at Al-Helal Al-Emarati Maternity Hospital. Among them was a baby girl whose family could not be located. The medical staff, touched by her strength, named her “Malak,” meaning “angel” in Arabic.

Malak’s story is nothing short of miraculous. Found on November 16, just a day after a devastating attack on the Sabra Mosque that resulted in at least 50 fatalities and numerous injuries, she was only a day or two old. Remarkably, Malak was discovered unharmed amidst the chaos.

Her survival has become a symbol of hope in a region beset by hardship. As Malak continues to receive care, efforts are underway to locate her family. Her story highlights not only the plight of the innocent amid conflict but also the unwavering dedication of medical professionals striving to save lives under the most challenging circumstances.
