Folk Dance Meets Street: Wootsang Dance Crew Transforms Lhasa’s Scene

By blending traditional folk dance with modern street styles, the Wootsang Dance Crew is revolutionizing Lhasa’s cultural landscape.

Over the past 20 years, the Wootsang Dance Crew, Xizang’s first street dance group, has crafted a unique fusion of dance that resonates with audiences both locally and nationally. Founded by Tenzin Jigme, the crew has dedicated itself to merging the rich heritage of Xizang’s folk traditions with the dynamic energy of street dance.

In 2022, their innovative approach earned them the Outstanding Street Dance award at the China Hip Hop Festival. “This award is the most significant achievement for any street dance crew in Xizang,” says Tenzin Jigme. “It recognizes our hard work in bringing the spirit of our culture to new platforms and audiences.”

The journey of Wootsang began with a vision to preserve and promote Xizang’s cultural identity through contemporary expression. “We wanted to create something that speaks to the younger generation while honoring our roots,” Tenzin explains. “By infusing traditional dance elements into street dance, we connect the old with the new.”

The crew’s performances are a vibrant tapestry of colorful costumes, traditional music, and modern choreography. Their routines often tell stories of Xizang’s history, myths, and daily life, all set to the rhythms of hip-hop beats. This unique blend has captivated audiences across Asia, sparking interest in Xizang’s culture among diverse groups.

Tenzin Jigme attributes their success to the universal language of dance. “Dance transcends boundaries,” he says. “It allows us to share our heritage with the world in a way that is engaging and accessible.”

Looking ahead, Wootsang Dance Crew aims to continue innovating and inspiring. They plan to collaborate with international artists and bring their performances to a global stage. “Our dream is to show that tradition and modernity can coexist beautifully,” Tenzin remarks. “We want to be ambassadors of our culture, bridging gaps and fostering understanding.”

As they take to the streets of Lhasa and beyond, Wootsang Dance Crew stands as a testament to the power of cultural fusion and creative expression.
