Finding Lisa: A Photographer’s Journey Back to Yangshuo After 27 Years

Rediscovering Friendship in Yangshuo

Nestled amidst the karst mountains of south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Yangshuo has long been a haven for international backpackers and tourists. In the early 1990s, the county’s stunning landscapes and vibrant culture began attracting visitors from around the globe, eager to experience its unique charm.

In 1994, British photographer Peter Crosby embarked on a cycling journey through China. His travels led him to Yangshuo, where he stumbled upon a quaint establishment known as Lisa’s Café. Owned by the warm and hospitable Li Sha, the café quickly became a memorable highlight of his trip. Over cups of tea and shared stories, Peter and Li Sha forged a fleeting yet impactful friendship.

Twenty-seven years later, driven by nostalgia and a desire to reconnect, Peter has returned to Yangshuo. The once-sleepy town has transformed significantly, with modern developments interwoven with its traditional heritage. Despite the passage of time, Peter hopes to find Li Sha and reminisce about the moments that left an indelible mark on his life.

“Yangshuo holds a special place in my heart,” Peter reflects. “The kindness I experienced here, especially from Li Sha, is something I’ve never forgotten.”

The journey to rediscover old friendships underscores the profound connections that travel can foster. As Peter wanders the familiar streets, he is reminded of the universal language of hospitality and the enduring bonds formed across cultures.

Whether or not he finds Li Sha, Peter’s return to Yangshuo is a testament to the lasting impressions that people and places can leave on our lives. It serves as a reminder of the timeless appeal of exploration and the human connections that await those who venture beyond their borders.
