In the heart of Minqin County, located in northwest China’s Gansu Province, a remarkable transformation is taking place. Once considered an arid expanse unsuitable for agriculture due to severe water scarcity, parts of the Gobi Desert are now blooming with life, thanks to the unwavering determination of local farmers and innovative agricultural practices.
Seven years ago, Xu Ercai and his wife Chen Ying embarked on what many deemed an impossible endeavor: cultivating vegetables in the desert. Their neighbors watched skeptically as the couple tilled the unforgiving soil, convinced that their efforts would bear no fruit—literally.
Undeterred by the naysayers, Xu and Chen invested their savings and boundless energy into their plot of land. Their fortunes began to change in 2017 with the implementation of a rural revitalization strategy by the local government. A key component of this initiative was the introduction of a high-efficiency irrigation system designed to combat the region’s chronic water shortage.
“The new irrigation technology was a turning point for us,” recalls Xu. “It allowed us to use water resources wisely and sustainably, which is crucial in this environment.” With the ability to provide precise amounts of water directly to plant roots, their crops began to flourish.
Today, Xu and Chen oversee a cooperative that spans over 700 hectares. The once barren land now yields 12 varieties of vegetables, ranging from tomatoes and cucumbers to leafy greens. Their success has not only disproven initial doubts but has also inspired other local farmers to embrace modern agricultural techniques.
The couple’s journey reflects a broader shift towards sustainable agriculture in regions previously considered inhospitable to farming. By leveraging technology and government support, they have transformed their livelihoods and contributed to the local economy.
“Our goal is not just to grow vegetables but to cultivate a model of sustainable development,” says Chen. “We hope our story encourages others to see the potential that exists even in the most challenging environments.”
As Minqin’s fields continue to thrive against the backdrop of the desert, Xu and Chen’s success story stands as a testament to human perseverance and the impact of targeted rural policies.
