In the 1970s, the World Food Program named the Xihaigu region in northwest China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region as one of the world’s “most unfit places for human settlement.” Decades later, this desolate landscape became the starting point for an inspiring story of determination and transformation.
In the early 2000s, driven by the hope for a better future, a young woman named Wang Yueying left Xihaigu for the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountains. This area, with its unique climate and soil conditions, was beginning to emerge as a promising location for grape cultivation.
Starting from the bottom, Wang faced numerous challenges. She labored in the vineyards, learning the intricacies of grape planting and cultivation. Her dedication and perseverance paid off as she gradually rose through the ranks.
Today, Wang has contracted her own vineyard and serves as its manager. Reflecting on her journey, she says, “Never give up despite the hardships.” Her success is a testament to the power of resilience and hard work.
Wang’s story mirrors the transformation of the region itself. Once considered uninhabitable, the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountains are now home to a thriving wine industry, attracting investors and enthusiasts from around the world. The area’s wines have gained international recognition, putting Ningxia on the global viticulture map.
When asked what defines a vineyard manager, Wang’s answer is simple yet profound: “Never give up despite the hardships.” Her journey continues to inspire many in the community and beyond.
