Shenzhen’s Tech Workers Embrace Food Culture to Relieve Stress

Over the past decade, Shenzhen has transformed into a bustling hub for technology and innovation, attracting 190,000 returned students and two million technology professionals. Amid the rapid growth and high-pressure environment of start-up companies, these professionals have found unique ways to unwind and maintain balance in their lives.

“We have a lot of returned students. They’re relatively commonplace,” said Qi Shuyue, an employee at Orbbec Technology. “Out of six people in our department, four are returned students. In Shenzhen, high tech is developing fast. At this kind of start-up company there’s bound to be work pressure. However, we still take time to enjoy life. We have our own way of relieving pressure.”

One of the ways Shenzhen’s tech workers are coping with stress is by embracing China’s rich food culture. Gatherings over traditional meals provide an opportunity to connect with colleagues and friends, share experiences, and momentarily step away from the demands of work.

“Food is more than sustenance; it’s a way to bond and relax,” Qi explained. “We often explore different cuisines together, which helps us recharge and return to work with fresh perspectives.”

The fusion of a fast-paced tech environment with time-honored culinary traditions reflects the dynamic nature of modern China. As Shenzhen continues to draw talent from across the country and abroad, the city’s professionals are finding innovative ways to balance ambition with wellbeing.

For many returnees and tech enthusiasts, Shenzhen offers not just career opportunities but also a vibrant lifestyle that values community and cultural heritage. By integrating food culture into their routines, they are crafting a unique work-life harmony that supports both personal and professional growth.
