From Medicine to Storytelling: Tibetan Writer Bridges Cultural Gaps

Phuntsok Drolma, a graduate in clinical medicine from Fudan University, made an unconventional choice after completing her studies at one of China’s top universities. Instead of pursuing a career in medicine, she embraced her passion for storytelling, returning to her hometown of Lhasa to become a freelance writer.

For nearly six years, Phuntsok has dedicated herself to introducing Tibetan culture to a wider audience. Through her WeChat platform, she has shared over a hundred unique narratives about ordinary Tibetans, capturing the essence of their lives in her distinctive style. Her stories offer readers a window into the heart of Tibet, fostering a deeper understanding of its people, culture, and traditions.

“I just wish my name will be discovered, and the stories I document will prove useful in studying Tibetan society,” Phuntsok says of her work. Her commitment to sharing these tales serves as a bridge between cultures, promoting empathy and appreciation across diverse audiences.

By choosing storytelling over medicine, Phuntsok has opened new avenues for communication, highlighting the rich tapestry of Tibetan life. Her efforts not only preserve the narratives of her community but also inspire others to explore and connect with the vibrant cultures within Asia.
