Growing up in a small Russian city just 30 kilometers from the Chinese border, Nikita Kulaev always felt a deep connection with his neighboring country. Stories from his grandfather, who often spoke of China as Russia’s good neighbor and friend, ignited a curiosity in the young boy. Today, that dream is a reality. Nikita is in his second year of PhD studies at the School of Chinese as a Foreign Language at Peking University. Not only has he mastered the language, but he has also become a respected translator, bringing several Chinese classic literary works to Russian readers.
“Translating literature is more than converting words; it’s about conveying emotions and cultural nuances,” Nikita explains. His work has been instrumental in fostering understanding and appreciation between the two nations, continuing a legacy of friendship that spans three generations in his family.
