Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota – In the heart of the Pine Ridge Reservation, community activist Eileen Janis dedicates her life to empowering Native American youth. Working closely with young people, Janis emphasizes the importance of connecting with their rich cultural heritage and traditions.
“When they’re connected to our Native American culture and our traditions, they’re more calm,” Janis explains. “Those youth that have a connection are just outstanding to me. They are really good examples to other youth that don’t have that chance.”
Janis believes that fostering this cultural connection not only brings tranquility but also inspires young people to become problem solvers and confident individuals. “I want them to take every opportunity there is. I want them to be problem solvers for themselves and to feel good about themselves,” she says.
The Pine Ridge Reservation faces numerous challenges, including high poverty rates and limited access to resources. Janis’s work is crucial in providing support and guidance to the youth, helping them navigate these obstacles while preserving and celebrating their Native American identity.
By promoting cultural engagement, Janis hopes to inspire a new generation of leaders who are grounded in their heritage and equipped to make positive changes in their communities.
