Native American Youth Face Economic Challenges Amid Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing economic hardships for Native American communities, particularly impacting young people living on reservations. Despite pursuing higher education and specialized skills, many find limited opportunities upon returning home.

“Someone goes to school for filmmaking, they come back here and there’s nowhere to get a job. So that’s a lack of opportunity right there,” said Kyle Mesteth, director of Ground Control. “Someone has a passion for something and they go away and study it. And then they come back to the ‘res’ because they love their home, and then there’s nowhere to get employment for all the work they just did in school.”

Mesteth also expressed frustration with the media’s portrayal of life on reservations, which often overlooks the complexities and aspirations of the community. The lack of local opportunities not only hinders personal growth but also contributes to a cycle of economic stagnation.

The situation underscores the need for sustainable development and investment in reservation areas to create avenues for employment and entrepreneurship. As the pandemic continues to highlight disparities, there is a growing call for policies that support indigenous communities and harness the talents of their youth.
